The Best Coffee Shops in Downtown Monterey

Being in the heart of downtown Monterey, we are surrounded by incredible cafes and coffee shops. Coffee shops play a key role in the fabric of our community, providing spaces to gather, connect, work, and of course, caffeinate. Each coffee shop we highlight below has its own unique culture and community. We asked our members about their local favorite coffee shops, and here’s what they had to say:

Alta Bakery and Cafe: for the Ambiance

502 Munras Ave, Monterey, CA 93940

Just a short walk from The Pearl Works, Alta Bakery and Cafe is located within the historic Cooper-Molera Adobe, reflecting Monterey’s layered history. This café combines prestige with creativity, offering locally grown, seasonal ingredients and vibrant flavors in a balanced mix of savory and sweet dishes.

One member, Jeremy Miller, described the ambiance as cozy, “like a fuzzy blanket.” It’s the perfect spot to relax and enjoy the rustling of the trees and the feeling of the earth beneath your feet as you sip your coffee on their hacienda garden patio.

Captain + Stoker: for Light & Medium Roast Coffee

398 E Franklin St, Monterey, CA 93940

Captain + Stoker is more than just a coffee shop and roastery – it’s an urban haven where community, quality, and purpose come together. They focus on building lasting relationships with farmers worldwide, prioritizing high quality, freshness, and sustainability.

If you’re a fan of light to medium roasts, Captain + Stoker should be your go-to. They’re committed to bringing you a cup of coffee that’s as flavorful as it is meaningful.

East Village Cafe: For international vibes

498 Washington St, Monterey, CA 93940

Right across from The Pearl Works, East Village Cafe is a hub for connection, culture, and community. You’ll often see groups of retired locals chatting and enjoying the outdoor seating area. Owner Ryan, originally from Nepal, has filled the café with delightful cultural nods to his heritage.

The café serves authentic chai and organic coffee, each cup carefully crafted to bring out rich, unique flavors. Don’t miss the Global Villagers meetup on the first Thursday of every month, co-hosted by one of our members, Caroline DePalatis. It’s a chance to connect with people from all over the world and experience Monterey’s warm international community.

Member Hari recommends trying their mocha next time you visit.

Ad Astra: For the Sourdough

479 Alvarado St. Monterey, CA 93940

A newer addition to downtown Monterey, Ad Astra is known for its delicious pastries, long-fermented sourdough, and creative beverage options. They’ve recently teamed up with Smooth Coffee Co, a new local roastery from Sand City.

Mandy, one of our members, recommends trying Ad Astra’s yuzu-seltzer-espresso iced coffee – a refreshing twist on your usual coffee order.

Tired of the Coffee Shop Hop?

We love the coffee shops that surround us; they’re an integral part of the fabric of downtown Monterey. And, if you’re tired of hopping from café to café, there’s an alternative space where you can focus, work, and connect with other professionals.

Come by The Pearl Works for a day pass and see how it feels to work in a space designed with your productivity in mind – and yes, We have coffee too! We now serve the Smooth Coffee Co., taking the advice of our friends at Ad Astra!
