What is one of your superpowers? I often wake up singing, but that’s not my superpower. I have a talent for adlibbing new lyrics to common songs or popular jingles. Sometimes the rhyme is a bit of a reach, but they’re typically personalized with a humorous bent.
What advice would you give someone considering coworking? Try it. Depending on what you’re looking for, coworking can offer everything from a simple, quiet place to work outside the home to a supportive community and social network. You’ll figure out whether the vibe is your speed pretty quickly.
What’s one thing you learned in the last month? I learned what a broken transmission looks and (unfortunately) sounds like. And then was reminded of the terrific generosity and kindness of friends and strangers, despite what the news would have you believe.
What is a book worth reading? I think every book is probably worth reading for at least one person in the world. But for me, Donna Tartt’s The Goldfinch has a bit of everything you could want in a novel, and it’s a delicately crafted story with beautiful prose. As a nonfiction work, Anthony Doerr’s lesser-known Four Seasons in Rome will deeply resonate with anyone who has lived abroad or tried to learn a new language.
What do you do when you feel overwhelmed with work? My plan for what to do and what I actually do are not always in sync. That said, I try to remember to breathe: there are some useful techniques to regulate one’s physiology. I try to make a list of the 2-3 most urgent and actionable tasks and focus on those. I try to loop in people so they know to expect a delay, or to help offload some items from my plate. I try to remember to eat nourishing food, sleep, and exercise—to practice a bare minimum of self care.
What are you most grateful for? Impossible question. Another sunrise. That’s about all anyone can hope for. Otherwise, I’d say the amazing women in my life who have helped to raise and continue to form me.
